The restaurant comes to be thanks to Dick Vervoordt, developer of the Kanaal site, in collaboration with catering entrepreneur Vinko Pepa. Vinko was a regular guest at Shunka's since 2002, and befriended with the chef over the course of the years. This friendship brought Hideki Matsuhisa to Antwerp, and thus the idea emerged to found Restaurant K and to bring Matsuhisa's chef Roberto Vicente, who worked with him at Koy Shunka, from Barcelona to Antwerp.

Casual, cosy with a view on the water and with a large terrace to the patio side, where you can dine amidst the huge shrubs:

‘K’corresponds to everything Dick Vervoort had in mind to provide Kanaal with a contemporary bistro. Father Axel and mother May Vervoordt also got to add their own touch to the story. May chose natural materials and warm, earthly colours; Axel designed tables and benches, and selected a whole series of drawings, including some of the Japanese artist Sadaharu Horio, which add to the the artistic atmosphere.


A pure cuisine inspired by Japanese gastronomy with sushi and sashimi, but with a Mediterranean twist. 

"Here at Kanaal it has always been our intention to create a lively restaurant where people can enjoy healthy, tasty and fresh food in a congenial setting. Not too stiff, with small tables and where a pleasant buzz prevails. Wether it is just for a small bite, or for the more extended dining in the company of friends with a nice cocktail to start the evening with, it will give the site an extra vibe."
